Heartbeats

Some may go before us
While others are left behind
So treasure the time between us
While there still is time
Make the moments count
Don’t waste them with feuds
Let positive words and smiles
Set the trending moods
Watch as many sunsets
As you possibly can
Write eloquent love notes
In the ever-changing sand
Long for lasting love
But live it like you mean it
Be a friend for life
Always keeping your candle lit
Never have to say good-bye
But I will see you later
Knowing your faith is strong
And you know the Creator

I wrote this poem today, February 4, 2013, after reading about a young man taking his life at the tender age of 14, the same age as my daughter. How sad that life seemed so empty or hard that he just threw it away. Then I saw a post on a prayer wall about a woman losing her friend to cancer. We only have a short time to make relationships with others. Make those count. Let them know they are loved and that God longs to know them and love them too and give them eternal life filled with peace and joy.

God Knew We Were Meant To Be

I wrote this song just for you
to prove that my love is true
Didn't take too long to know
that with you our love will grow
I'll share with you everything
because you've made my heart sing

God knew we were meant to be
before even you and me
I know it was in His hand
cause here we are hand in hand

Each step that we take from here
we can take it without fear
Cause we know down deep inside
that we have nothing to hide
Every trial that we must face
we'll be strengthened by His grace

God knew we were meant to be
before even you and me
I know it was in his plan
cause here we are hand in hand

I wrote this song July 20, 1989. Not until after I had written it did I realize  that it had exactly 7 syllables in each line.  I sang it to my husband at our wedding on August 5, 1995. Then I sang it for my grandparent's when they renewed their wedding vows on their 50th wedding anniversary.  It is my desire to record it on an accompaniment for others to enjoy at their wedding.

What Is True Love?

Is it a kiss that lies upon your lips
Is it a tear that sometimes slips
Maybe it is a bondage that won't let go
that holds so tight and grows so slow
What I see is a hunger that has been fulfilled
A full committment that has been signed and sealed
I am sure it is fragile because it is so rare
so be very careful and show a lot of care
Let it be warm and tender
and let it be a heartmender
Don't let it be incomplete
like all the other defeats
It should be understanding
and always have soft landings
It's something no matter how hard I try
It seems to keep passing me by
It's a wish come true
and a God bless you
It's a lifetime goal
that only a few can afford its toll
It's a touch of grace
sent to fill an empty space
It's the "willing obligation of both to give"
That is what "true love" is

I wrote this poem in church when I was probably supposed to listening to the sermon. It was October 11, 1987. I started writing it at 11:50 am and finished it at 10:22 pm. I was 16 years old. I was on a quest to find true love apparently. I wrote about writing this poem on my other blog at homemadeharmony.blogspot.com if you want to check that out.

And It Faded Away

I stood gazin in the distance
so aware of its existence
It was there all day long
but I knew by night it would be gone
It warmed my soul
and it made me feel whole
The wind caught my hair
and the feeling was so rare
I searched for the essence
and I longed for your presence
Time was running out
I wanted to shout
I pushed away my past
and yearned for this one to last
The tears burned in my eyes
as the darkness filled the skies
The beauty and love the sunset portrayed
was now like us..fading away

This poem was written September 24, 1990, which ironically is my husband's birthday. I didn't meet him until three years later. I am not sure which guy inspired this poem, but I seem to have quite a few poems that are tear jerkers.

Watching My Garden Grow

Alone in my garden one day
I watched  two squirrels at play
They paid no mind I was there
so I just sat and stared

In and out of bushes they'd scurry
up and down the paths they'd hurry
No deadline to meet
just acorns and leaves to eat

My flowers in full bloom
fresh fragrances to consume
 A breeze a sweet delight
from the heat of warm sunlight

Roses all in different shades
the soft hint of hue that cascades
 A painter's dream to expose
but a writer's privilege to compose

The shadows of yesterday seize
The Secret
Only the maker and I know
It's while watching my garden grow

This poem was written April 2, 1997.  I more than likely was sitting outside writing. I am most inspired while enjoying nature. I had been married for two years and didn't have any children yet, not til the following Spring.

Welcome

I started writing songs before I was old enough to write them. I would sing lyrics to my dad and he would write them down. Here is where I will be sharing with you thoughts and moments I have expressed in poetry and songs. I wrote some of these for others when I was asked to. It was a pleasure to be able to help others express their feelings in creative form. It was interesting sometimes how I was inspired to write some of these. I will share with you some commentary along with some of my pieces why, when, where and whatever else comes to mind to explain the origin. Several of my friends have suggested I write a book with my poems..and through Google maybe I will. This is my first step. It has taken me over twenty years to get my poems out of a box and on the computer to share with others. I hope you enjoy and are touched by my words.
